Harrison Ford never thought he’d be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) at the age of 81, but his casting as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ added a huge charm to the film. Especially when it became clear that this Hollywood icon would be “Hulking out” on screen. Now, his presence has catapulted him further up the list of Hollywood’s highest-grossing stars.
‘Captain America: Brave New World’s’ box office success wasn’t assured, but a nearly $200 million worldwide opening weekend saved it from being a failure like 2023’s ‘The Marvels.’ With that, Ford also surpassed Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson at the box office. Had Johnson’s ‘Black Adam’ been more successful, his total box office figures would have been even higher, but for now Ford is $140 million behind Johnson with a gross of $4.32 billion.
However, this lead may not be permanent, as Johnson has several big projects lined up and could regain his place soon. But if Ford returns in the upcoming ‘Avengers’ films- ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, his figures could go up even further. With these films likely to cross the $2 billion mark, Ford could take his career to even greater heights and surpass ‘The Rock’.

Will Harrison Ford Return as Red Hulk in ‘Secret Wars’?
In the world of Marvel, it is difficult to predict which character will return when and where. Appearances of Samuel Sterns, Betty Ross in ‘Brave New World’ and even Bucky Barnes before his next appearance in ‘Thunderbolts’ point towards this.
Thaddeus Ross has a long history in the MCU. The character was first seen in the second MCU film ‘The Incredible Hulk’ in 2008, where the role was played by William Hurt. Hurt also played the character in major films like ‘Captain America: Civil War’ and ‘Black Widow’, but after his death in 2022, the role was given to Ford. Casting the 81-year-old Ford in the role was a bold decision, as he is almost a decade older than Hurt.
Looking at Marvel’s upcoming film schedule, it seems that the stars of the MCU have a very busy time ahead. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to begin shooting soon, while ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ will wrap next year. The final chapter of the multiverse saga is expected to bring major changes to the MCU, and may see many characters for the last time. Ford’s Thaddeus Ross could be one of them, and if another appearance of his takes him even higher at the box office, it would be nothing short of a great gift to his fans.
