Cobra Kai: The final five episodes of Cobra Kai have been released, but that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the franchise. Instead, there’s a lot of talk about a potential spin-off of two favorite characters. ‘Cobra Kai’ was originally created to carry on the legacy of ‘The Karate Kid’, with the return of William Zabka and Ralph Macchio being the biggest attraction. However, the series introduced several new characters who quickly became fan favorites. In addition to popular characters like Miguel Diaz, Samantha LaRusso, Robby Keene, and Tory Nichols, there’s a possibility of a spin-off of two characters introduced in Season 1.
Speaking to ‘Entertainment Weekly’, Cobra Kai creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg discussed the potential spin-off. During the interview, Kristen Baldwin talked about the possibility of Hawk (Jacob Bertrand) and Demetri (Gianni Decenzo) studying at Caltech. Heald said, “That might be an idea we’ve already discussed.” Hurwitz joked, “It looks like he stole the file from our computer! There might be a really detailed document on the subject.”
Hawk and Demetri were introduced in the first season of ‘Cobra Kai’ as two geeky friends of Miguel Diaz. Hawk, whose real name is Eli, adopted the Cobra Kai mindset and adopted a new look to make himself seem stronger. Demetri, on the other hand, was initially reluctant to learn karate but later became an expert in the Miyagi-Do style of fighting. Their friendship went through many ups and downs throughout the series, as the two were pitted against each other in karate matches several times. But in the end, the two are shown packing up their car and heading to Caltech.
‘The Karate Kid’ Franchise Expands Into ‘Miyagiverse’
At the moment, no official announcement has been made about the future of ‘Cobra Kai’, but the creators of the series have made it clear that they want to take the story forward. The final 16 episodes gave a glimpse of several potential spin-offs. For example, Samantha LaRusso studying in Okinawa, a potential romance between Chozen and Kim Da-yoon, and now Hawk and Demetri’s new journey at Caltech. All of this has led to the concept of a larger ‘Miyagiverse’ where these characters’ stories can connect with each other.
The first major expansion of the franchise will begin this summer with the film ‘Karate Kid: Legends’. It will be the first theatrical release of the ‘Karate Kid’ universe in 15 years. However, ‘Karate Kid: Legends will not have any direct connection to ‘Cobra Kai’. It will take place two years after the events of the series, with Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) from the 2010 ‘Karate Kid film working together to train a new student.
Whether the film is successful or not, Netflix will look for new ways to continue ‘Cobra Kai’ given its popularity. As the show says – “Cobra Kai never ends!”
